Confirmation 2009

confirmation2009

This year Bishop James Newcombe came and presided over a wonderful confirmation service.  Four of the six candidates were from the Priory (three of them also attend St. Bees School).  Pictured with James are Daniel, Jamie, Rowan, Lucy, John and Tracey.  Let us pray God’s blessing upon them as they begin this new chapter of their life with Christ.

From the Vicar, June

Very few people derive any sort of pleasure from injustice. In matters of sport, employment or whatever the vast majority of us do not prefer to succeed at ‘any cost’. If we win a game or gain a promotion by cheating, by falsehood we are robbed of genuine satisfaction at our accomplishment. Of course, there are people who seem to be able to be satisfied at a ‘job well done’ even though they did the job deceitfully or those who seem to take pleasure at injustice. I think that is a symptom of a deeper illness which has not been addressed.

Truth is like a bobber; it has always in it a certain tendency to make its way to the surface. When it comes to the surface justice can be done. In matters of sport, particular teams may get away with unscrupulousness for a long time, but the individuals doing it cannot. We all long for justice. In his preaching Jesus tapped into this longing as well. The people he was preaching to were surrounded by injustice, political and religious. “In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops’” (Luke 12.1-3). Hypocrisy is a form of injustice in that our conduct quite intentionally hides a very different interior life. We claim to be what we are not.
