History of the Priory
The Priory has a rich history. It was named after after the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary at York, and Bega, the legendary Irish princess who is said to have landed here.It was founded in the 12th Century as a Benedictine Priory, is now a Grade 1 listed building. It is not only a place of worship for villagers and a popular choice for weddings and baptisms, but also a community centre and excellent venue for many cultural and musical events. It therefore attracts both parishioners and visitors, with the latter being estimated as over 2,000 a year from all parts of Britain and the world. We are gradually increasing the historical accounts and descriptions displayed within the church for the benefit of visitors. If you have not already visited us, we hope you will do so soon. If you have already done so, we hope you will come again. You may follow the link to our village website. On it you will find much more historical information. Hopefully your questions can be answered there, if not, you can find contact information for those involved in Priory history. Here are two 10 minute clips of some of the history of the Priory and the stained glass that furnishes it. A full length, high quality DVD can be purchased by contacting one of the wardens, Rosalie McAndrew.
