New Lighting

The existing lighting is inadequate for the proposed history displays and is not movement activated apart from two areas. The proposed lighting design has been developed by an experienced lighting design company that has produced designs for maany churches in the country.

Summary of proposals

Proposal for re-lighting the displays at St Bees Priory Church.

Baptistry / crèche

This area requires a general level of lighting, suitable for the various uses of the area, such as children and families taking part in activities, illuminating the activity pin-boards etc.  This includes the noticeboard just outside this area.

The lighting in this area will be: 5 No Concepta fittings with 100w lamps installed at high level close to existing main lighting.

This lighting will be switched at high level by passive Infra-red (PIR) detector but have an override at low level adjacent to display boards  and can be isolated back at the distribution board.

T-wall

Interpretive displays on the T-wall, together with the church notices and retail displays, require a specific lighting to illuminate the displays while avoiding casting shadows falling across them.

The area will be illuminated by 8 No Basis Connect fittings, with 50w low voltage lamps.  These will be mounted on top of the wall, together with an individual transformer for each fitting.

This lighting will be switched on by a passive Infra-red (PIR) detector and to enable it to be switched off during services there will be an override switch at low level. The best place for this would be tucked away on the column / or mounted on the display boards near the column.

History area displays

Interpretive displays in the history area, together with the table and chairs for study, require specific lighting to illuminate them while avoiding casting shadows across the displays.

Interpretive displays in the history area will be illuminated by 1 No Concepta fitting with 100w lamp installed on the column, and by 4 No Electrospot fittings with 50w lamps, all at capital level.

This lighting will be switched on by a passive Infra-red (PIR) detector and it can be switched off during services. From the same override switch which controls the T wall

Lapidarium

Interpretive displays in the lapidarium area require specific lighting to illuminate them while avoiding casting shadows across the displays.  A raking side light is also needed to pick out detail in the carved stones.

Interpretive displays in the Lapidarium area will be illuminated by 6 No Electrospot fittings with 50w lamps, all at capital level, together with a 9w led light to emphasise the medieval effigies.

This lighting will be switched on by a passive Infra-red (PIR) detector and it can be switched off during services. The override switch for this will be the same as for the T-wall  and history area.

The Lady Chapel

Interpretive displays in the Lady Chapel need to be illuminated, together with the two Josefina de Vasconcellos statues.  In addition, the textile hanging behind the altar on the east wall is to have its single spotlight replaced.

Interpretive displays in the Lady Chapel area will be illuminated by Concepta  fittings with 100w lamps installed at high level. The Josefina Statues  will be lit by Electrospots at high level with 50w 10 degree lamps

This lighting will be switched on by a passive Infra-red (PIR) detector and it can be switched off during services. The switch for this will be in the vestry at low level or to the right of the column in the chapel itself at low level as there is an existing cable run from above.

A Electrospot at high level will illuminate the textile on the east wall to be operated by PIR with an override on. The switch for this could be mounted on the wall to the right of the column with the override switch for the chapel lights.

General

All cabling to be neatly and properly secured.
No fixings can be made into the existing stonework, only into mortar joints.
Cable should be fixed with P clips if the mortar joints prove to be too soft for standard nail clips
Cables should follow existing cable runs where possible
Cables which are in general view should be painted out in a colour which matches closely the colour of the stone work or timber to which it is fixed.
